Bonding and Black Triangle Repair

When gums recede, they often leave behind a condition known by patients as “black triangles.”

The black triangles are the spaces between the triangular-shaped roots of the teeth. Not only are these spaces unsightly, they also have a tendency to trap food, which leads to bacterial growth and decay.

Preserving the integrity of your tooth structure is an important concern. The more healthy tooth structure we can preserve, the better your long-term results. Bonding using the same material we use to create tooth-colored fillings can fill in these spaces and improve both the health and appearance of your teeth – without the need to alter existing tooth structure!

What Causes Gum Recession?

Periodontal disease is one of the most common causes of gum recession as well as one of the most serious. When plaque and tartar build up near the gumline, the gum tissue becomes irritated and pulls back from the teeth, creating spaces between the gums and the teeth. Bacteria invade these pockets and an infection develops, causing further recession.

Gum disease isn’t the only reason that gums recede, however. Other possible causes include:

  • Aggressive brushing or using a toothbrush with overly firm bristles
  • Genetics
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Grinding and clenching
  • Gum tissue injuries

We will need to see you here in our Encinitas dental office to assess the causes behind your gum recession. It may very well be that a simple change to your brushing habits could help prevent further recession!

Why Treat Gum Recession?

Most patients with gum recession contact us because they are concerned about how their teeth look. This is certainly a good reason to investigate treatment options, but treating recession will help in other ways as well.

For instance, when gums recede, more root structure is exposed. This increases your risk for both painful sensitivity and decay. We want to help you avoid these issues. The gaps between the roots of your teeth also have a tendency to trap food, which can lead to bad breath and continue the cycle of gum disease.

How Bonding Works

Composite resin, the same material used to create white fillings, is applied to the existing tooth structure in layers and allowed to cure. Dr. Nguyen can carefully shape the resin to complement your teeth and look great with your smile. We can also blend the color well so that it matches your existing dentistry.

For many patients, bonding is a more budget-friendly solution than crowns or porcelain veneers. It also requires far less preparation of the tooth structure. Preserving healthy tooth structure is always one of our priorities!

Bonding can also often be completed in a single appointment, which patients appreciate. Imagine leaving our office with an improved, healthier smile!
