Dental Implant Restorations
At Delicate Dental Arts, we offer a number of options for solving the problem of missing teeth.
Missing teeth can harm your confidence in your appearance, and give you anxiety about the impression you make in many social and professional situations. You’re not going to look and feel your best in a business meeting, on a date, or at a party if you’re self-conscious about not wanting to smile and show your teeth.
Beyond issues of appearance, missing teeth can make it more difficult or impossible to enjoy some of your favorite foods. One of the solutions to consider is dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacements for your natural teeth. They are designed to work as much as possible like your original teeth. They consist of an implant post and a crown or denture.
The implant post is made of titanium, a biocompatible metal. Just like an actual tooth root, it anchors to the jawbone. A replacement crown—which extends above the gum line like an actual tooth—is secured to the top of the post.
Over time, your body accepts the post and integrates it with your jawbone tissue. In the end, the implant becomes a permanent oral structure.
Planning for Your Implants
In order to decide if dental implants are appropriate for you, Dr. Nancy Nguyen will assess your medical history and the current status of your oral health. She will check your jawbone density where the implant posts would fit. It’s possible that prior to receiving the implants you will need a preliminary procedure, such as a bone graft or sinus lift. Dr. Nguyen will discuss with you everything you need to know about the dental implant procedure from start to finish.
If it is determined that dental implants are right for you, Dr. Nguyen, as your general dentist, will oversee your case, work closely with the oral surgeons and prosthodontists responsible for surgically placing the implant posts in your mouth, and then complete the procedure by carefully attaching your crowns to the posts.
The Advantages of Dental Implants
Patients who receive dental implants regain the ability to eat most or all of the foods that they could not with missing teeth. Generally, patients with dental implants can eat more foods comfortably than can patients who wear dentures.
There is also the obvious benefit to your appearance, which can be quite striking. This can give a greater confidence and pride, leading to more personal and professional success.
But perhaps the biggest advantage is that implants stimulate your dental bone to maintain itself, and thus improve dental health. Left untreated, missing teeth can cause problems including diminished bone and even facial collapse.
Dental implants can be brushed and flossed like your own teeth; there is no special care needed beyond that. Right after placement of your implants you’ll want to visit Dr. Nguyen one or more additional times so she can make sure the implants are stable and your top and bottom teeth are fitting together the way they should, but after that, you can return to your normal schedule of twice per year check-ups and dental cleanings.
