Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Carlsbad CA

If you had the choice between keeping a tooth in place and relieving the pain or extracting it and having to replace it, which would you choose?

We recognize that when you’re in pain, this choice might be difficult, but keeping your natural tooth is the most conservative option. Extraction should always be a last resort.

Root canal therapy is the conservative treatment that relieves your pain and allows internally compromised teeth to remain intact. While people often look worried when they are told they need a root canal, you should know that this treatment has evolved considerably. Dr. Nguyen will take great care to make sure that you are numb prior to beginning the treatment and that you are comfortable throughout. In most cases, the process is as simple as placing a filling!

When Is a Root Canal Recommended?

Beneath the enamel and dentin of each of your teeth, an internal canal allows room for the pulp to bring nutrients to the tooth and remove waste. The pulp is the tooth’s lifeline.

As a child, the pulp is important for tooth growth. As an adult, your teeth no longer grow, so the tooth can remain in place without it. A deep cavity, fracture, or other injury can damage the pulp, which often leads to infection. Pressure builds inside the tooth’s canal, and you get a serious toothache!

This is when you have the choice – root canal or extraction.

How Is a Root Canal Done?

Dr. Nguyen offers sedation dentistry and various types of anesthesia, so your root canal therapy will be comfortable. During the procedure, she’ll remove the infected pulp from your tooth’s canal and replace it with a rubbery material to prevent further infection.

In most situations, a root canal’s final step involves placing a crown atop the compromised tooth. The whole procedure may take only one visit.

If you choose root canal therapy, you won’t have to worry about replacing an extracted tooth, which can be costly and time consuming. Dr. Nguyen offers second-opinion visits, as well, so if your dentist has recommended a root canal or extraction, call Delicate Dental Arts in Encinitas for an appointment.

Is a Root Canal Right for You?

Only a dentist can diagnose the need for a root canal, but there are often indicators that the pulp of your tooth is infected. These include:

  • Throbbing pain
  • Sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Increasing pain while chewing
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • A lesion like a pimple at the gum
  • Swelling in the gum tissue

Sometimes an infection in the early stages won’t cause any symptoms at all. This is one of the reasons why seeing us twice a year for regular check-ups is so important. If we can diagnose and treat an infection early, you won’t have to experience any pain at all!
